  9. SRB separation usually occurs around 45 km (28 mi.) above the Earth├òs surface. Parachutes inside the SRBs open to slow their descent and protect them from damage when they land. The SRBs usually touch down in the Atlantic Ocean, about 220 km (137 mi.) off the coast of Florida. They enter the water nozzle-first and float with the front end sticking about 9 metres (29.5 feet) out of the water. The SRBs have a radio signal and flashing beacon to help the retrieval crew locate them in the ocean.
